the old Render setup functions get wrapped in XAA init, the new ones don't. it's not clear to me what this wrapping does, but it's probably something important.

My fault. Patch looks good in principle, but need to test.
checking this one in. works for me but needs wider testing, and it's not getting any just sitting here.
