Description Willie Sippel 2004-09-09 20:40:06 UTC
I wouldn't call this a bug if it weren't (re)introduced with 6.8.0. Using X11
6.7.99.902 and 6.7.99.904, KDE always used scalable fonts if available (for
Helvetica for example, I have the usual X pcf fonts _and_ Helvetica (Adobe)
Type1 installed). Since I updated to 6.8.0, KDE always uses the pcf font (like
6.7.0 did), and it seems to be impossible to make X prefer Type1 over bitmap
fonts...

BTW, when will we get rid off the pcf fonts?

Did you build the X distribution with the Freetype rasterizer enabled ?
Scaleable outline fonts are now mainly handeled via the Freetype backend...

Of course I did. And now, after I disabled all pcf fonts, I get nice
antialiased, scalable fonts again. But that's not really the point. Is there
any reason why the behaviour seems to have changed from 6.7.99.904 and 6.8.0?

There are at least three fonts available as pcf and scalable fonts on my
system (with the same name): Courier, Helvetica and Lucida, and I only get the
pcf's...

This is a configuration issue, not a bug in X.Org. If you require
assistance configuring the X server, font server, or fontconfig to
give a particular font preference order, please use one of the
X.Org mailing lists for help.
