Description mihail milushev 2004-09-14 09:21:54 UTC
keyboard does not work at all in X. trackpoint works fine. ctrl+alt+backspace and ctrl+alt+fN do not work - chvt or killing X from a remote machine are the only ways to get back to console; keyboard function is restored then.

Comment 2 mihail milushev 2004-09-14 09:43:15 UTC
X reports "Using vt 16" - however, vt 16 is occupied by a getty; until now i've been running only xfree86 (4.3.0), which correctly allocates a new terminal and doesn't overlap with an already occupied vt. i guess this is the problem, as it turned out that the console at vt 16 is full of noise characters, obviously the keystrokes that did not reach X. here is the full Xorg.0.log:

Does this still happen?
Comment 4 mihail milushev 2005-09-16 03:28:33 UTC
yes, it still happens with 6.8.2.
Comment 5 mihail milushev 2006-02-28 22:40:01 UTC
Is there any progress regarding this problem? I've tried to investigate it a bit
myself, but it only gets weirder. On line 124 in
programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/lnx_init.c, the next available VT
is queried via VT_OPENQRY, and practically nothing is done with the returned
value before it is sent to the log (where it is printed that VT 16 was probed as
the next free VT). However, I have tried VT_OPENQRY-ing /dev/vc/0 myself, and
the result was not 16 but 25 (which was really the next available VT at that
moment).
Comment 6 Michel Dänzer 2006-03-01 01:22:51 UTC
This usually happens due to a race condition between the display manager, the X
server and the gettys at system startup. Possible workarounds:

* Most display mangers seem to explicitly pass vtX to the X server by default
these days.
* Move the startup of display manager and X server 'further apart' from the
startup of the gettys or whatever reserves the VTs for them.
Comment 7 mihail milushev 2006-03-01 01:56:17 UTC
I do not use a display manager and X is not started during init, I run it
manually with startx long after all gettys have started. The VT that it
incorrectly probes is always 16, there is no variation there. I have altered by
startx script to explicitly state a fixed VT, but this has caused minor problems
in the past (I tend to forget to change startx after X.org upgrade thus finding
myself with no working keyboard again, and also it is inconvenient to run two X
instances on different VTs when the VT is hardcoded in the startx script).
Comment 8 Michel Dänzer 2006-03-01 18:38:09 UTC
I see, thanks for clarifying. It sounds then like the X server can't reserve VTs
beyond 16 for some reason.

As for the startx workaround, I suggest creating a wrapper script in a
non-system-managed location such as /usr/local/bin that calls the real thing
something like

/usr/X11R6/bin/startx -- vtX

or just adding the vtX argument manually on the startx line.

Did Michels workaround resolve the problem?

Sorry for the delay. Yes, explicitly specifying the terminal works and I've been
using this workaround ever since I figured out that the problem is the wrong
terminal allocation. I even wrote a perl script to determine the actual first
free terminal and launch X on it, since from time to time I need two instances
of X running and hard-coding the terminal is not always useful.

Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future.
Comment 14 Matt Turner 2010-12-02 13:04:25 UTC
This can't still be a problem, can it?
